Liz Truss was the prime minister of Britain for 49 days in 2022, an interregnum between Boris Johnson and Rishi Sunak that was so short it was outlasted by a lettuce. If this were the 19th century, Ms. Truss would have perhaps exiled herself to a country estate where peacocks roamed the grounds or fought her enemies with pistols. (In 1809 the foreign secretary, George Canning, was wounded in a duel with the war minister.) A. Disgrace” — but was never really considered a likely leader of the Conservative Party until her predecessor Mr. Johnson almost burned the party down. (Even Mr. Canning, who survived his wounds and eventually became prime minister, lasted longer.

The resignation of Liz Truss after only 45 days in office and even fewer in power means that by next Friday, Britain will have had three prime ministers in a single year for the first time since 1827. This rapid turnover at the top has happened before in Britain through the sudden death of the incumbent (George Canning in 1827, Andrew Bonar Law in 1922). It would be even more remarkable if two of this year’s three prime ministers were to be the same person: Boris Johnson. Political parties in the modern sense barely existed in Lord North’s day; there were only factions. And there isn’t much of a Conservative Party now, only factions.
LONDON — Liz Truss lost to a head of lettuce. The leafy vegetable's decay was more gradual than Truss' crumbling tenure as British prime minister, which ended with her resignation Thursday. Her decision provided an unlikely victory for the lettuce, which had been pitted against her by a tabloid newspaper last Friday. Amer Ghazzal / Shutterstock“The lettuce outlasted Liz Truss,” the caption declared as a remix of “Celebration” by Kool & the Gang kicked in, lights flashed in the background and bottles of alcohol were added to the scene. Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev tweeted “congrats to lettuce” shortly after Truss’ speech.
When Liz Truss announced her resignation Thursday, she secured her place as the shortest-serving prime minister in British history. Truss, who was appointed by Queen Elizabeth II on Sept. 6 and will remain in office until the Conservative Party chooses a successor, has been on the job for 45 days as of Thursday. Her five immediate predecessors each lasted at least 1,000 days, or almost three years. The previous record holder was George Canning, who was appointed prime minister in April 1827 and lasted 119 days before dying of pneumonia that August.
